1. Attendance and Apologies

Sonja Danner welcomed everyone, and thanked Lesley Prior and Paul Hopkins for arranging everything.
Apologies from Henk Pol [Illness], Alfred Weber and Cath Sinclair.

2. Minutes

Minutes Addition Item 9.: Julia Ipgrave’s book was published by RE today Services. Otherwise OK.

3. Welcome from the Chair and Chair’s report

  • Outi Raunio-Hannula replaces Marja Honkaheimo on the Exec.
  • January at CoGREE group meeting
  • Looked for new contacts in Europe. Cyprus – Paul Hopkins, Poland - protestant ; Slovenia – Sonja Danner working on this; Slovakia, Malta, Iceland – Hugo Verkest to follow up; Greece – Florin Tomoloaga follows up.
  • Friend of EFTRE also possible in countries where no association.
  • WASACRE and RE Olympics need to be realistic on which resources available- would like to support when possible. We need to work out more for RE Olympics, how to overcome the challenges. How to cope with the language issue. Display at a conference? Possible to split in two, primary school where art plays greater role, upper secondary where language barrier is not so big. We can use the conference to ask for successful student and pupils work for display, and discuss the idea. Using Show and Tell to present.
  • Focus on conferences and continue exploring RE Olympics

4. Treasurers’ report

Collected £900 last year. € 12872,- on account.

Board members have to send invoice on to member organisations, together with Newsletters, remind of conference upcoming, and updating the membership list. Our web site has the most updated membership list. There is a growing interest for the topics EFTRE stands for. Set deadlines for paying.

Action Point: Hugo (Continent) and Paul (UK) to contact all organisations and request subscription. All board members responsible for requesting from their local organisations.

5. Norman Richardson’s proposal

The mini-seminars could be done more widely as they are a good idea. We need to take into consideration where and when we can use our expertise for seminars.

Maybe we can use Erasmus funding for Institutions part of that system.

Some places it would be a good idea to do a second version in the evening for teachers who can’t come in day time? Each country needs to consider the situation for their own country in order to have the maximum benefit.

Action Point: To consider how we can apply for funding from EU grant schemes including moving towards NGO status.

6. Conference 2010, Bruges,

Challenging RE: Poverty and Social Inclusions as European Issues

25-28 august 2010, changes made due to local situation.

Accommodation will be made through a local organization, so that each participant books their own accommodation. We will provide a list of cheaper options as well.

Venue: A former abbey, now priest seminary; student rooms (with bath) can also be used by the conference. The Exec will stay here, and it is an option for those requesting financial support.

Early Bird : booking and paying before 1 March 2010, 10% reduction.

Keynote speakers only 2 due to response from last conferences.

Paulina Arola: accepted on conflicts and social problems and solutions. Political overview include, encouraged to end with questions that Robert Jackson picks up on. Also accepted. We need to keep in dialogue with him to which points we would like him to cover. - narrow down to 2-3 perspectives or the Redco project findings could be useful.

Workshops has to do with the theme, suggestions are appreciated. Sonja will collect suggestions. Those who do the workshop twice, will not be asked to pay the conference fee. They have to pay their own accommodation. Due to the room situation we can have 8 parallel sessions. RE Olympics could be raised in a workshop as can a workshop on the origins of the Peace Movement.

General Assembly will be held on Thursday

Excursion to Ipres - dealing with history in RE, need to clarify the connection to the program, what do we learn from history and conflict? How do we deal now with conflict? Conflicts far away? Experiences brought into the classroom? Reflect on ethical and moral questions raised by Ipres.

Action Point: Executive to discuss arrangements for these outings and the activities to fit into the conference theme at the November meeting.

Finances: Fee € 270 which includes meals and excursion as stated in the program. Travel and accommodation in addition. Board members need to look for sponsorships in own country

  • Deadline for board members 1 May 2009 for info on internet siteAdvertising:
  • Mainly electronic information, with short texts in own language.
  • Produce posters and postcards; poster printed when needed - and spread electronically.
  • It is the responsibility of the board members to send out the information and to get the information in magazines.
  • Paul Hopkins will help to make leaflets in other languages if necessary.

7. CoGREE

Peter Schreiner informed on

  • 2008 Berlin Conference Diversity Shapes Europe’s Future; bringing together various actors, 108 participants, contributions are on ICCS web page
  • Colloquy in Klingenthal, Council of Europe Oct 2008, discussing the White Paper on Intercultural dialogue, the statement is on CoGREE web site, CD-rom info being produced. Will be a valuable tool
  • Secretariat: Dutch sponsorship for at least 3 years, will continue 1 more year
  • Agreed statute
  • CoGREE is not NGO, presently a coordinating group
  • Next colloquy in Klingenthal 4-8 Oct 2010

8. Country reports for 2009-2010

Board members need to let Paul Hopkins know whether things stay the same, or write a new country report of about 500 words, both in English and own language

Action Point: All to check their country report for 2009 and to let Paul know any updates.

Oral reports from Wales, Northern Ireland, Austria, Finland, England, Hungary, Estonia, Germany, Rumania and Latvia.

9. Website

Paul Hopkins reminded on the country reports.

10. Newsletter

Paul Hopkins asked for:

  • Country reports for the newsletter, both in English and mother tongue

  • Events in Europe
  • EFTRE in your country

11. Renewal of EFTRE Leaflet/ Flyer

This time we will make one that can be downloaded and printed whenever needed, in several languages (English, French and?). If we keep it without names, it will last longer as the names will be available on the web site

Some of the information will be on an international level, some space can be reserved for national information. Paul Hopkins will make a template so that the board members can produce their own leaflets, or help produce leaflets country leaflets.

There will be an initial cost no matter the amount printed.

Action Point: PH to look at costs for production of leaflet – plus provision of template for local information.

12. Proposed Constitutional Changes for the General Assembly of 2010

Are there any suggestions for changes in the Constitution? Or any additions?

Please inform Paul Hopkins if you would like to suggest any.

Some changes were brought up and discussed:

  • The Toledo principles do not need to be part of EFTRE’s constitution, could be annexed
  • Points that need clarification are:
    • Who is vice person replacement of the chair?
    • How to dissolve EFTRE if needed
    • What will happen to EFTRE’s assets if the organisation is dissolved.

Action Point: PH to produce draft of constitution for next executive for presentation at the General Assembly in Bruges in 2010.

13. EFTRE seminars

Next in Helsinki in connection with the Executive meeting. Will Estonian teachers also be invited to participate?
Workshops offered by Paul, Lesley and Sonja.

Action Point: Outi and Risto to co-ordinate presentation in Helsinki

  • Imperial War Museum good exhibition on Holocaust
  • Where will the following conference be? Need to be decided during Conference in Bruges.
