The Executive's report to the General Assembly
on the work of EFTRE 2001-2004

Chairman’s Introduction

Jeremy Taylor welcomed delegates and observers to the General assembly of EFTRE. A special welcome was given to those attending the meeting for the first time. He introduced the structure of EFTRE and the mandate of the General Assembly. The procedure of the meeting was agreed.

The Assembly agreed that Jeremy Taylor should take the chair and Marit Hallset Svare take the minutes.

Approval of the minutes of the 2001 Edinburgh Assembly

Under item 7 CoGREE Report, a correction was made European Association (not Alliance) for World Religions in Education. Otherwise the minutes were approved.

Executive Committee’s Report 2001-2004

Jeremy Taylor presented a written report on behalf of the Executive Committee, see copy attached. He highlighted the following issues:

  • EFTRE’s legal status
  • The importance the co-operation in CoGREE has
  • Thanking the Finnish organisations for funding and staff

The report was approved.

Treasurer’s Report 2001-2004

Hans Fijn van Draat presented a written report on the EFTRE accounts in the Netherlands. Of the member bodies only 30-40% are able to pay, and do pay. The surplus from the Edinburgh conference is reserved for paying Marianna Szabó’s expenses. The report was approved and thanks to Hans Fijn van Draat for keeping the accounts for a number of years.

Finances: to set the membership fee for 2004 – 2007

The Executive Committee proposes to keep the fee at €100 for the next period.
The General Assembly agreed to this.

Confirmation of the Board members for 2004-2007

A list of the nominated board members was presented. The list was approved.

Project Reports

Website: Paul Hopkins informed the meeting of the current status of the website. Nobody had contributed to the Classroom or the Discussion Forum. National reports are requested, if possible in two languages, and put on the site as Paul Hopkins receives them. He will also look into the possibilities of getting a page with Cyrillic fonts.

CoGREE: Peter Schreiner gave an introduction to what CoGREE is, the Klingenthal consultation in October 2004, together with the plans for further co-operation in Berlin October 2005 where some 100 politicians and members of CoGREE will discuss the value of RE.

Teacher Exchange: Martin Rogers and the FREE organisation offers stays of 1 month for teachers from the Eastern and Central Europe to go to Western Europe. There are difficulties in getting enough applicants. A new initiative has started ESSSAT, where 15 RE teachers are supported to attend conferences.

Developing EFTRE work in Eastern and Central Europe.

Marianna Szabó reported on her efforts to get in touch with Eastern and Central European RE teachers. The brochure has been of great help. RE-teachers from these parts of Europe are dependent on financial support to attend our conferences. Alasdair Morton , Cath Sinclair, Carin Laudrup together with Marianna Szabó will continue the work done before the Edinburgh conference to raise funding for our Eastern and Central European colleagues to join our conferences.

Arrangements for the next conference

In light of item 8, we will try to organise the conference in 2007 in Budapest.

Any other business

Please send Paul Hopkins the national reports as soon as possible.

On behalf of the EFTRE Executive,

Jeremy Taylor (Chairman EFTRE)
