School Report 2007

English

Speaking and Listening: Freya's contribution to our class have been greatly valued. She is always keen to give her ideas and her answers and will confidently talk for a range of different audiences. Freya is able to listen with sustained concentration and follows instructions well. During whole class sessions, she will listen with interest, whatever the subject. Freya is a confident member when working in a group and will allow other children the opportunity to have their say.

Reading: Freya has made great progress with her reading and her accuracy and confidence have gone from strength and strength. She used expression to make her reading aloud more interesting and uses a range of strategies to decode unfamiliar words. She can confidently recall the main events of a story she has read and her comprehension skills are very good. Freya has looked at a range of material during our guided reading sessions and enjoys selecting different genres and her reading books.

Writing (including handwriting): Freya has also made very good progress with her writing and now we look forward to reading all about her ideas. For Freya's writing, we have been targeting sentence structure and now Freya starts her sentences with different words. She has also started to join ideas in a sentence so her work is more interesting to read. Freya spells common words correctly and is beginning to use a dictionary/word book to help with words that she does not know. Freya forms her letters correctly and her joined handwriting style is confident and fluent. We are especially please with the way Freya has improved her pace when writing - she now ensures she gets all her wonderful ideas into her work. Well done Freya - we a re delighted with your progress.

Target for improvement: Freya's handwriting is delightful. She just now needs to try to write a bit quicker.

Mathematics

Using and Applying: Freya's progress in this subject has been excellent and she is always ready to take on board new concepts. She is very confident when explaining the methods she chooses and uses a wide range of mathematical vocabulary. Freya tries hard to make sure her work is appropriately organised although this care does tend to slow down on occasions.

Number: Freya can count a set of objects reliably and can use mental recall of addition and subtraction facts to and beyond 10. She can work out the answer to number sentences and uses different strategies to assist her in her calculations. She has a good understanding of the place value of two digit numbers and can order numbers up to 100. She can recognise simple odd and even numbers and continue simple number patterns. What a great year for Freya - we are very delighted.

Shape, Space and Measure: Freya has demonstrated a good understanding of 2D shapes and enjoys using them to create patterns and pictures. She has investigated models using 3D shapes and can describe their properties using the correct language. She has used different non-standard units to carry out different measures and is beginning to sue cm and m when measuring length. Freya has a secure understanding of time. She has recently looked at right angles and measuring turns. What a super year.

Target for Improvement: I think that when Freya is in a year two class she will have more confidence when explaining her answers and leading discussions in small groups.

Science

Scientific Enquiry : Freya's science work shows the care and attention she applies to all the subjects. She uses tables and charts to organise her findings and enjoys finding things out independently. She can use simple equipment and always works with resources sensibly and safely. Freya always shows an interest and is confident when sharing her predictions and finding with the rest of the class.

Topic: Freya enjoyed investigating the topic 'ourselves' and was able to explain what we need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. She looked at different materials and was able to describe their properties, including sorting objects into 'found' and 'made' sets/ She investigated how materials can be changed and enjoyed making toast as part of this experiment. She was able to predict as we looked at how far toy vehicles can move and recognises that forces can be slowed down and change direction.

Foundation Subjects

Information and Communication Technology: Freya has used the programme Granada Colours to further her creative work and recently created a fantastic seaside picture to support our history work. She is confident when working in the computer suite and she enjoys working with other children. She has used ICT to work with text and pictures and is able to combine the two when necessary.

Religious Education / Personal, Social and Health Education: Freya listens attentively to bible stories and has shown a real enthusiasm for looking at Christian celebration and festivals. The work that she produces shows great care and consideration and she understands the need to say 'thank-you'. Freya is very considerate to the needs of others and she works co-operatively with her group. She understands what is fair and unfair and is now more confident when making choices. Freya always enjoys contributing her ideas during circle time and she listens very carefully to the thoughts of others.

Design and Technology / Art and Design: What excellent work! Freya's care and attention to detail is particularly apparent in this subject and she has produced some delightful artwork, especially using ICT. She works very hard with a range of materials and processes and is beginning to evaluate her own work. When constructing she can make a simple design and is able to say what she is making. She has looked at different ways of combining resources in her work and is able to suggest ways in which her work can be improved.

History / Geography: Freya really enjoyed researching places for our 'One World Week' and was able to relate to her own experience when talking to other children. She has looked at different artefacts to further her understanding and uses words words to describe these objects. In our geography work Freya has looked at the local area and has made comparisons with a different locality.

Music: Freya listens attentively in this subject and can recognise how sounds change. She is very interested in playing the instruments that we have in our music lessons and knows that the sounds are made in different ways. She enjoys songs and joins in with enthusiasm. She has looked at long and short sounds and can copy a simple sequence.

Physical Education : Freya's confidence in this subject has grown tremendously and she now participates with a real enthusiasm. Freya has shown a strength for gymnastics and willingly shows her work and movements to the rest of the class. She plays games fairly and particularly enjoys parachute games. We are really pleased with her progress.

General Comments

Freya's progress has been excellent this year. She is a delightful member of class 3 and even after spending some time travelling, she moves into Y2 with some very good friends. Freya's attitude to learning is a pleasure to see. She takes on board new challenges with some interest and curiosity and talks about her experiences confidently. Her behaviour is an example to others. It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with Freya over the past year. She is more then ready to face the challenges that lay ahead in Y2 and we are certain her new class teacher will feel as privileged as we do.

We wish her every success. What a super year.
