Festivals

Eid MealThere are two main festivals in Islam, one of which is at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, called Eid-ul-Fitr, and the other at the end of Hajj called Id-ul-Adha. On the morning of Eid day Muslims gather for the Eid prayer which, where the weather permits, is preferably prayed outdoors to accommodate everybody. In the UK it is held mosque or in a large hall hired for the purpose. Some mosques will need to hold several prayers on that day because of the large number of worshipers attending.

The festival celebrations then extend to three or four days and are an occasion for visiting extended family and friends. On Eid-ul-Fitr money or food known as Zakat al-Fitr must be given for each individual by the head of a household before attending prayer. On Eid-ul-Adha many of those who are not on pilgrimage will give sacrifice of a sheep in commemoration of the sacrifice of Abraham and distribute the meat amongst the poor, relatives, and friends.
