The Sacraments

A sacrament is a special way in which God comes into direct contact with a person. Sacraments contain signs and symbols and have an important effect on people's lives.

All Christians recognise the sacraments of Baptism and Communion (Eucharist).

Catholics recognise five more sacraments, giving a total of seven:

sacraments of initiation or welcome (including Baptism and Eucharist)

sacraments of life and vocation

sacraments of healing and strength
