The NASACRE Recruitment and Training project

The purpose of this project is to increase the involvement of members of faith communities in their local community and to build the capacities of SACREs. The initiative is part of the RE Action Plan, the outcome of the REC’s Partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families and builds on the 2006 REC pilot.

The first year of the roll-out has been completed [read a report] and work has started on year two. The second phase, between April 2009 and March 2010 will cover the South-west region (14 SACREs) and a joint tranche of the East of England and the South-East region (29 SACREs). The training activities will be the same as in 2008/9.

Work has continued since the pilot on setting up and maintaining a comprehensive database of SACRE details, including Group A vacancies. Meetings with SACRE chairs and LA advisers in the targeted areas will be held in the autumn to establish local support and set dates for training and school visits and identify venues. A Reference Group of national representatives of faith communities has met to inform the recruitment process. Recruitment is currently taking place, in collaboration with local contacts, and training for the first cohort will take place between early January and the end of March 2010.

The training will comprise two full days, one in January to focus on RE and the second in March, focusing on collective worship. In between the two training days, delegates will be invited to attend a local SACRE meeting of their choice (details will be supplied) and to make an accompanied visit to a school to observe an RE lesson.

Anyone in either of these areas who is interested in serving on their local SACRE should contact either:

Marjorie Crombie: marjoriecrombie@hotmail.com or Julie Grove on secretary@nasacre.org.uk

In year two of the project there will be an emphasis on sustainability with the production of a ‘stand-alone’ pack of training materials which will be trialled in the late autumn and circulated to SACREs for their use in the summer term of 2010.
