Kidz United: Blackburn with Darwen NASACRE Project

Pupils from four schools in Blackburn with Darwen have been making firm friendships. Drawn from Years 2 and 6 from Audley, St Mary and St Joseph, St Thomas’s and Shadsworth schools, they have joined together in different activities designed to help them get to know one another and meet new people. Teams made up of children from all four schools have taken part in a football tournament, parachute games, mask-making, poster creation, an African drumming workshop, bulb planting and Circle Time which gave everyone the opportunity to work with and get to know new partners.

Year 2 pupils began their fun day with an assembly where the Audley children performed a dance based on a poem, The Rainbow People. The Rainbow People began as friends but gradually became isolated until they realised by working together everyone’s needs could be met. In January 2007 the four schools came together again in a celebration of friendship. The theme was re-emphasised in the drama led by Shadsworth children who demonstrated the importance of accepting one another’s differences and working together in harmony.

Whilst the vehicles for promoting these new friendships are important the sustainability of these relationships is all but assured. Parents of the children involved were delighted with the friendships formed and they will provide a sound basis for harmonious transition to High School.
