International Association for Science and Religion in Schools
Welcome to the International Association for
Science and Religion in Schools

The International Association for Science and Religion in Schools (IASRS). The Association has been launched at two conferences, the ESSSAT and SRForum Conference at Edinburgh in April 2010 and the EFTRE Conference in Bruges in August 2010.

A considerable interest has already been shown in the ‘science and religion debate’ at school level. The world’s first project in this area was the ‘Science and Religion in Schools Project’ based in the UK which started in 2002 and was supported financially by the John Templeton Foundation. Details of this project are to be found on this website. Since then three other projects have been developed in the UK (see the links bellow). The sharing of information and experience is extremely valuable in this area, as for many others. The Directors of the SRS Project have therefore decided to allow its materials to be used by other such projects round the world without charge, provided that permission is sought and that acknowledgement is given when the materials are quoted.

The International Association for Science and Religion in Schools is looking for people to contribute articles about the schools' education systems in their countries in relation to learning about science and religion. If you are willing to write about your education system and/or would like to be added to our contact and distribution list, please email us. If there is anyone else you would like to suggest joins the list please encourage them to e-mail us.

The President of IASRS is Professor Michael Reiss at the Institute of Education, London and the Director is Prof Berry Billingsley at Swansea University. The email address to contact us at IASRS is contact@iasrs.net

* We are saddend to report that Martin Rogers OBE died in late 2018. Martin's contribution to the world of Religious Education is hard to exagerate. As a teacher of science and of religion, as a headteacher supporting the dialogue, as the director of the Farmington Institute awarding reserch scolarships for teachers, and finally as the Director of the Science and Religion in schools project Martin's work and legacy will be fondly and long remembered.

The Bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth, 12th February 1809, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of 'On the Origin of Species', 24th November 1859, ensured that the Science and Religion debate continues to have a high profile.

The Faraday Schools Project: This is a pilot site for the Faraday Schools Project (see also the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion). Almost everyone ponders "big questions" at one time or another. But where do you go for answers? Science and religion look like obvious choices except that according to over 50% of teenagers science and religion don't agree ...
Test of Faith: The Faraday Institute in partnership with Contrapositive New Media have produced materials on science and faith that are relevant and accessible for churches, with contributions from leading scientists and theologians. Find out what we are about here, take a look at the film, book and course, and watch this space for further developments.
The Wonder Project: The wonder project is a meeting place for educators and subject experts who want to create authoritative and imaginative educational resources that invite students to ask big questions and encourage them to seek answers.
