This is a well thought-out app. It’s a simple idea: tap on the the two words which are opposites! It gets tougher though! Before you know it, even the whizziest child will be challenged! It includes a dictionary feature which provides a simple explanation of each word. We like how it provides a strong context for children who are developing their phonics strategies. The spellbook is one of several apps by Mr. Thorne who has whole range of Youtube videos and teaching apps available. The focus is very much on testing pupils’ spelling and use of phonics, rather than explicit teaching but we feel it makes good use of rewards and praise as children are successful on each letter sound. It covers the whole range of intial letters and blends and is useful for all children working through this level of reading and spelling.

This provides a great interactive opportunity for children to work on their phonics skills through play. Each grid provides a range of questions aimed at developing and testing children’s word skills, knowledge of letter sounds, blends and rhymes. Our children enjoy the variety and the opportunity it offers. It is best used by two children with an adult available to support some of the reading if needed. My Spelling Test allows the teacher to create a test, choose the name of the test, add words to the test and for each word you type the word and record yourself saying the word. The child takes the test, listens to the word they need to spell, spell the word and then see instantly if they've spelt the word correct before going to the next word. Use your word power and strategic cunning to crush your opponents and reign supreme. Settle your differences with word play rather than swordplay. Compete your troops to make high scoring words from the letters given, then capture territories and conquer islands in the virtual reality board game.

Here is a fun and creative way to introduce young people to the joys of the orchestra and the thrill of music-making. This app is aimed at 7–11 year olds but will be enjoyed by much younger children and grandparents alike! It is also a great resource for the classroom. At the heart of the app is a new, complete recording of Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark Elder. The games and quizzes are an engaging way of becoming familiar with the music while learning about the instruments, musical terms and composition.
