Keynote

David Waugh: David has published extensively on primary English and on management of educational change, the subject for his doctoral thesis. His publications include sixteen books for Scholastic designed to support teachers and trainees in planning for teaching. English 3-11 (2008, Routledge), written with Jolliffe, W, is a core text for many ITT providers. Its successor, English 5-11, was published in October 2012. Teaching Systematic Synthetic Phonics in Primary Schools (Jolliffe, W and Waugh, D with Carss, A) was published in June 2012 and has also become a core text for ITT programmes. David completed four books (Teaching Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, Children’s Literature in Primary Schools, Beyond Early Reading, and Phonics Audit and Test, and an app. on Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar in 2013. He is currently completing a book with Wendy Jolliffe, Supporting Secondary Readers.

Fractious Fractions It's the way you tell 'em

This workshop will explore some of the subject knowledge and pedagogical issues associated with the teaching of fractions as set out in the new National Curriculum for mathematics. This workshop will explore strategies for behaviour management.

Keep taking the tablets Using students’ voices to improve teaching in schools
Paul Hopkins Max Hope
Digital Literacy lies at the heart of modern learning and the affordances of tablet computers is a central part of digital literacy. Come along to this session for a dozen ideas on using tablets in the classroom – and bring your own idea too! For secondary or primary NQTs. This workshop will introduce participants to a new model for improving teaching in schools, one which listens to the experiences of students and uses these data to develop inclusive practices. Examples will be given from using the model in Hull, Manchester, Lisbon and Madrid.

Afternoon Workshops
An inclusive learning environment: creating effective and supportive settings for all learners Inclusive strategies to support New Arrival,
EAL and European Roma learners
Dave Howard Claire Head / Naomi Wilson
This workshop will consider factors to do with utilising the physical space, resources and the environment to meet individual needs. Reflecting on classroom culture, environment and practice and its impact on all learners. This workshop will consider inclusive strategies that support International New Arrival, EAL and European Roma learners to become part of the school community. Tutors will also discuss frequently raised subjects such as language acquisition versus language learning and EAL or SEN from both research and personal experience.

Grappling with grammar and perfecting punctuation Phonics: teaching the complex alphabetic code
John Bennett Wendy Jolliffe
This workshop will explore the grammar and punctuation aspects of the new national curriculum and what teachers need to know for both this and the spelling, grammar and punctuation test. This workshop will explore strategies for teaching the more complex aspects of phonics.
