Taking study further?
Masters in Pedagogy and Practice Journal Clubs for teachers
We are developing a Masters degree that is rooted in the work you do in your classrooms. This is aimed at teachers with 60 M level credits from their PGCE (or other) who want to progress and do research that impacts on their practice. There is a growing interest in looking at research and a growing demand that teachers are "research savvy" (Carter Review, Jan 2015) we would like to start some journal clubs - contact p.hopkins@hull.ac.uk for more details.

Using iPads to enhance learning in field work

The objective of the session was to introduce strategies for using iPads to enhance T&L. We looked at a number of Apps that could be used if the teacher was the only one who had a device and/or where students have access to a device. We looked at AirServer as a tool to see students' work displayed onto the whiteboard, we then assessed the potential of Explain Everything in the context of setting differentiated tasks for students to complete and then display to their classmates and for assessment purposes. The final demonstration was of Plickers, a web based assessment tool.

Using video to support reflective teaching and learning

The use of Video Enhanced Observation (VEO) is starting to become more prevalent in teaching situations. This presentation providied an overview of new software to support the capture of teaching during a lesson, with a view of using this to inform and aid reflection post teaching. Providing an overview of research into the practice of video stimulated recall, the benefits of adopting such an approach were explored with video data capture from the early part of the session used to support and model process.

Developing Reasoning in Mathematics

This session covered three essential aspects: Why reason? When is reasoning needed? Thinking about your Maths lessons. It took the NQTs through a discussion and practical session on the three aspects leaving them with a range of ideas (and sources of resources) to enhance the reasoning opportunities that they offer when teaching mathematics.

Supporting learners with English as an Additional language

This session focused on supporting mainstream teachers to work with new EAL arrivals across different sectors: it shines light on who EAL learners are, their diverse needs, and challenges they might face in their school education. It familiarised the participants with the basic tenets of well-established EAL pedagogy, and further provided and allowed the participants to practice certain useful strategies for teachers to consider: graphic organisers, substitution tables, directed activities related to text and word maps.

Teachers as researchers

The current focus on research and development as part of the “big 6” in teaching schools has encouraged some schools to take a more active role in the development of evidence based practice. This presentation provided an overview of why we should review our own practice and how this might be achieved within a teaching setting. This was modelled through the dissemination of a project developed at Wolds Teaching School that focused on the development of effective tutor time through the use of mentoring strategies developed as a result of whole school engagement.
